Begin with the work, not the technology
The useful question is not where a business can add AI. It is where a business problem is important enough, repetitive enough or information-heavy enough to justify changing how the work gets done.
A clear objective comes first: respond faster, make information easier to find, improve consistency or give people more time for work that requires judgment. If the objective cannot be stated plainly, the AI project is not ready.
Look for bounded, observable work
Good starting points have a defined input, a recognizable output and a person who owns the result. Customer inquiry triage, internal knowledge retrieval, call summaries and first-draft preparation are examples of work that can be evaluated without handing an entire decision to a system.
- 01The task happens often enough to matter.
- 02The expected result can be described and reviewed.
- 03The information needed is available and appropriate to use.
- 04A responsible person can intervene when context changes.
Keep judgment where consequences are meaningful
AI can organize, summarize, draft and identify patterns. People remain accountable for decisions that affect customers, employees, finances, safety, rights or reputation. The greater the consequence of an error, the stronger the review and escalation path should be.
Human involvement is not a sign that the technology failed. It is part of a well-designed operating model.
Test one useful outcome
Choose a narrow workflow, establish what good performance means, and compare the new approach with the current one. Review quality as well as speed. Listen to the people doing the work and the people receiving the result.
The right use of AI is the one that creates practical value without weakening accountability. Start there, learn from evidence and expand only when the next step is justified.
